Think or Smile Mixtape 0×003: Wondering how we got here

Think or Smile Mixtape 0×003 is a little all over the place – think of more as a journey – through the smoke hazed LA beat scene courtesy of Flying Lotus, Take and a Flylo produced Killer Mike track. To laying in sand with Monster Rally and Javelin. Side note: If you don’t have the Javelin ‘No Mas’ album yet, go get it, it just might be your go to summer in the backyard soundtrack. Next up is some head noddin’ / body moving with Cosmic Sound, Sliegh Bells and the new Matthew Dear single (new album drops Aug 16.) Then it gets raw and dirty with new TOBACCO and a grimy Lorn remix, which gets bleeped out by Plastikman, who played a ridiculous live set at DEMF last week. Finishing up is a chopped ‘n screwed Prince track. It’s been stuck in my head for a bit now.. you’ll hear why.

The Portrait Machine Project: Recording what a psychic might see

When I first saw these Polaroids from Carlo Van de Roer ‘s The Portrait Machine Project I was struck by the acidic color washes and immediately curious as to how he achieved it. Turns out it’s not just some filter, aged film or developing technique, he’s using a Polaroid aura camera developed in the 1970s by scientists who were attempting to capture the auras that a psychic might see. I won’t pretend to understand how the camera works, but from what I’ve read the auras are rendered as each subject holds a biofeedback plate during the exposure. What happens then is beyond me.

Another interesting part of The Portrait Machine Project is that every Polaroid is matched with the cameras interpretation of the person. Describing what type of energy lies in their future, what they’re experiencing in the moment and how they are expressing it. If your left side is green, you may have growth and healing in your future. As opposed to red, which means you’ll be actively creative and should take the opportunity to enjoy sensual pleasures. Purposefully vague yet oddly specific. Regardless of if you believe in any of the metaphysical rational behind each image, the results are quite intriguing and if nothing else, beautiful. I would love to have a self portrait from one of these cameras and I’d be curious to see what kind of vibes I’d be giving off.

Free Music Collection: June 2010

I’m addicted to new music. There I said it. I’ll freely admit to spending much of my free time seeking out new soundtracks for the week. Luckily there are countless sources out there for free [LEGAL] tunes.. mixtapes, EPs, demos. In the interest of chronicling and sharing I’ve decided to start posting a monthly collection of links to the free music I’ve dug up. I’ve no plans of analyzing or breaking down everything, there are already good resources for that.. like Jakub’s finds over at ISO50, Alex’s blog.H34 or Gorilla vs. Bear. I’ll simply link to the things I’ve downloaded and enjoyed. Everything from deep south hip-hop to minimal Detroit techno to heady L.A. beats to blissed out synth pop.

This first one is probably a lot to digest because I have quite a backlog of links to share. Moving forward I’ll likely adjust the collection frequency as needed, either bi-weekly or bi-monthly. If you are the kind of person who wants to know about new shit immediately, like myself, I post new finds as discovered on twitter @thinkorsmile - Follow me here if you want to be in the loop. As always this is a work in progress so any comments / suggestions / recommendations are welcomed / appreciated.

Make sure to check out my mixtapes while your here or have a listen to the latest mix on the Soundcloud player in the upper right while your exploring. Enjoy!

Ten minute trains of thought, with no destination in mind

Ten minutes is a nebula of art, music, words, thoughts curated by twenty year old hong kong expatriate Joanne Lam. I came across it by way of a recent Kitsune Noir post of Danica’s. Essentially, Ten Minutes is a series of mixes that run ten minutes long accompanied by art and a random contemplative phrase. Seems simple enough, but I was intrigued by the idea of what could be done in only ten minutes. To be honest I was a little disappointed on first impression, it auto played the mix with nothing but an illustration to look at.. BUT then I found the archive. There you’ll find 24 past mixes with a little more substance, a hazy noir black and white photo, tracklisting and a poetic line for you to think on, like “it can even mock the invisible world with its own shadows,” or “here is always somewhere else.” The mixes are all very chill, rich, earthy and quite ambient at times. Each mix, with image and text, is quite thought provoking, even poetic. She says they’re ten minute trains of thought, with no destination in mind, which I can vouch for.. I’m actually having a really hard time writing this because I keep spacing out on number 17 and number 1. It’s not the kind of stuff I’d listen to everyday but I am impressed by some of the track selections. I thought I had a pretty solid knowledge base in ambient music but there’s a handful of really nice tracks that I’m going to have to look into, which I love.

So if you’re the kind of person that enjoys ten minutes alone with your thoughts, put on some good quality headphones, preferably late at night and just space. Now I’m going to emphasize the headphone at night part because I tried a couple of these out at 11am while working and had to move on, they just weren’t doing it for me. But now, as I write this, at 11pm, I can’t seem to focus on anything.. although, that could also be the chamomile tea.
